Narcissus and Large Round Mirrors

Large Round Mirror Concept for Living Rooms, Hallways and More

It seems a living room is hardly complete if it does not have a mirror in it. Large, small, convex, flat mirrors, round mirrors, square, oval, full length, ornate or simple; mirrors are an important element in our home interior design.

Beyond practicalities, mirrors provide a certain profound service to all – an awareness of ourselves. Awareness not from within but without, externally so to speak. One wonders how life was centuries ago when the average person had no daily reference of the self in the third person – seeing yourself as other people see you. In the circumstances was it hard to submit to self-reflection when one had no external reference point? When Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection, it was in a pool of water.

In Greek literature Narcissus was known for his beauty. He was proud, in that he disdained those who loved him. He was attracted to the pool where he saw his own mirror image in the water and fell in love with it. Unable to leave the beauty of his reflection, Narcissus lost his will to live. He stared at his reflection until he died.

What did Narcissus really fall in love with? His beauty or his identity? In the modern context we think of a narcissist as one in love with the beauty of their physical self. For Narcissus however was his understanding of his identity not in some ways incomplete. The story tells us he did not live with a mirror. Perhaps his love grew from the knowledge of his own identity. He had effectively found himself.

Narcissus by Italian painter Caravaggio (1571-1610) depicts Narcissus captivated by his own reflection.

In a modern home the mirror is not intended as a device for self-love, but it does remind us of ourselves, and perhaps this reminds us to look inside as well. Think of your self as a person in a place, in a time. In the modern context identity is very much behind the design choices people make. If we are lucky we choose things we like and things that reflect our idea of living well. They are in a small way or sometimes large, an expression of our identity. Hopefully our homes are authentic this way.

Reflecting Design feels that there is no better way to create this context than through a large convex mirror. Flat mirrors capture the person. The person is the subject. Convex mirrors capture the person and the place. The world is a fascinating place and with great satisfaction a convex mirror reminds us of this.

Reflecting Design – Large Mirrors

Rohana

French curves (bezier curves) mix with flat surface transitions to produce a fortress-like profile (see sketch below). Rohana is 2 inches smaller in the diameter than the Lola. The designs differ in that Rohana is more masculine than Lola. but similar in that both are transitional in style.

Transitional in interior design implies the use of traditional motifs interpreted to produce a contemporary piece. Rohana is not ornate like a traditional frame but not as severely basic as modern piece. The result is a beautiful design, timeless and clean.

Odlum Entrance encompasses the “statement” mirrors in the Reflecting Design collection – the large mirrors, both convex and flat. Statements mirrors are as one might imagine, mirrors that command or stand out in space through their size. As convex mirrors they project a definitive affection for the convex reflection look. They capture the room and reflect the atmosphere completely.

Like the Pazzo 38 a bespoke LED back-light kit is available for the Rohana mirror. Fully dimming the LED creates an unparalleled lighting ambiance. Light escapes from behind producing a silhouette resonant of a solar eclipse. Contact Reflecting Design directly for pricing and specifications.

The Mirror

All Reflecting Design mirrors use acrylic to create the convex mirror lens. Acrylic provides for a more consistent geometry. Consistent geometry means an even proportional scaling without any of the stretching or distortion one commonly sees in these type of glass mirrors. Acrylic also allows for greater variability in the geometry which means Reflecting Design can maximize the height of the curve for an optimal visual experience.

Lola

Lola in form is like a cup, widening as it extends forward. The result is a frame design that opens out to the viewer. The widening design permits a deeper frame without producing a tunnel effect. With convex mirrors a tunnel can produce an interesting visual effect, as one sees well in our Pazzo 38 design. But with a mirror of Lola’s dimensions a tunnel is not ideal.  French curves billow forward ending in a soft lip. The return tucks under and back to the center. An interesting comparison can be made looking at the Rohana and Lola sketches.

The style is transitional. Transitional in interior design implies the use of traditional motifs interpreted to produce a contemporary piece. Lola is not ornate like a traditional frame but not as severely basic as a modern piece. The result is again timeless, and clean.

Odlum Entrance represents all the statement decorative convex mirrors in the collection. These mirrors are intended to convey a definitive attitude towards the convex mirror experience. They state their presence as both a convex mirror and a mirror frame. They capture the room and reflect the atmosphere completely. They demand your attention in the most agreeable manner.

The Mirror
All Reflecting Design mirrors use acrylic to create beautiful surface quality in the convex mirror lens. Acrylic provides for a more consistent shape of a mirror’s surface. Consistent geometry means an even proportional scaling without any of the stretching or distortion one commonly sees in a glass convex mirrors. Acrylic also allows for greater variability in the geometry which means Reflecting Design can maximize the height of the curve for an optimal visual experience.

Chromo

Chromo is the largest and boldest design in the Odlum Entrance collection. A large 35 inch mirror centers a busty 48 inch frame. The effect is an imposing statement of style and taste. If the Lola is a receptacle the Chromo mirror design is ‘the cup that floweth over’. There is no negative space here. Chromo bulges forward with muscularity.

The style is transitional. Transitional in interior design suggests the use of traditional motifs interpreted to produce a contemporary piece.

Bizari

Bizari resides on the line between the medium size and large size convex mirrors by Reflecting Design.

Bizari is a 40 inch diameter framed convex mirror from Reflecting Design. The design is a scaled up copy of the Corinth frame design. Such is the popularity of the Corinth that a larger version was being requested.

At 40 inches outside diameter Bizari is entering the realm of our statement mirrors as represented by Odlum Entrance. Bizari looks great everywhere; above a mantle, behind a couch, above a dining room console, a piano, a bed. This mirror sets the scene where ever. The mirror is 32 in. diameter delivering abundantly the wonderful convex mirror experience. The lens bulges to near maximum, never passing the front edge of the frame at 4 ½ inches from the wall.

Convex mirrors as decoration are used in interior design to provide a predominantly experiential effect. Convex mirrors curve outward grabbing reflections from the side and front. The effect is uniquely inclusive and engaging. The mirror is symmetrical. Objects are reduced evenly and there is no stretching or distortion in a the convex mirror. The bulge of the lens offers a softness – what we like to call feminine sensibility, which is very agreeable. A great offset to the hard lines common in so much architectural design today. Convex mirrors as decoration are used in interior design to provide a predominantly experiential effect.

Like the Corinth, Bizari is stylistically a transitional design. Transitional in interior design suggests here the use of traditional motifs interpreted to produce a contemporary piece. Bizari employs traditional curves and line but it is not severe or minimalist as a modern piece. There is no extraneous decoration. The result is a beautiful design, timeless, and clean.
